Green Tips When Moving

As the summer approaches, so does the peak season for moving. According to the , the average American moves once every 5 years! Between the supplies and the equipment involved in moving, it can quickly become a heavy burden with a big impact on the environment. Follow and share these green tips to make moving a better experience (for the environment anyway!).

Use Plastic Crates

Use Plastic Crates vs. Cardboard Boxes
The average move can require 60 cardboard boxes, which takes a tree weighing 1,000 pounds to produce. A great eco-friendly alternative to cardboard boxes are plastic bins or crates. Plastic bins can be reused over and over again post-move, while cardboard boxes normally end up hitting the dumpster or recycle bin immediately. There are a variety of different companies that will rent plastic moving boxes if you prefer not to buy them – ask your moving company if they can provide or search online to see what is available in your area.

Reuse

If Renting Is Not an Option…
Whatever the reason, if renting plastic crates is not the best option for you, consider purchasing reusable packing materials instead of buying new. Check out this to find such items. When you’re unpacking, cut the packing tape instead of just ripping it off. This way, it will better keep the integrity and strength of the box so it can be used again. Fold it up and store it away, post it online for others in need to use, or go old school and build your kids a fort!

Purge (Then Pack)

Minimize Your Load
Declutter, donate and sell as much of your stuff as possible before you move. The less stuff you have to pack, the easier it will be for you and the fewer resources you will require to make the move. Check out some tips we shared for spring on How To Declutter if you need a little inspiration to get started. A good rule of thumb – if it’s still in the box from your last move, you probably don’t need it! Plus, donating items can be a tax write off. Just remember to document everything and get receipts.

Forget the Bubble Wrap

Get Rid of Bubble Wrap and Foam Peanuts
Use dish towels, bath towels, t-shirts and socks to wrap your fragile items. Not only will you be protecting your items, but it’s also more cost effective! You’ll save money on packing supplies and cut down on the overall number of boxes you’ll have to move.

Look for the Green Seal

Pre- and Post-Move, Use Eco-Friendly Housecleaning Products
There’s nothing better than coming home to a clean home, and there’s nothing worse than moving in to one that needs a deep clean. To make moving less stressful, outsource cleaning. You’re busy enough packing and coordinating the logistics. Hire a cleaning company for your Move In/Move Out clean who uses Green Seal Certified® housecleaning products to ensure the safety and well-being of your family.
